LinkedIn Hits 10 Years


From what started out in a humble living room to a giant website in today’s online world, LinkedIn has achieved a huge milestone in the industry – reaching 10 years of connecting professionals from all around the world.

It all started on May 5, 2013 when Reed Hoffman first launched LinkedIn and invited several hundred of his colleagues and friends to join. Now, the social networking site for professionals have more than 200 million users, 26 offices and 3,700 employees all around the world.


But things did not start off great for LinkedIn. During its early years, the website was getting as few as 20 sign ups from people who wanted to use the free services but as they say, slowly but surely. The website was bound to succeed because of its unique selling point. The website wasn’t only connecting people they already know, users can also connect with potential bosses and employees. It’s a social networking site for professionals which was a result of the Dot-Com bust and when the biggest social networking sites at that time were MySpace and Friendster.


"At the end of our first month, we had 4,500 members in the network," wrote Hoffman in a post. "10 years later, we’re honored and humbled that so many of you have made LinkedIn a part of your daily professional lives."


LinkedIn is older than many social network sites considered as the dominant players of this day and age. It is eight years older than Google+, three years younger than Twitter, and about a year older than Facebook.

Early on, LinkedIn developers already saw its financial potentials. It created a business model in order to earn revenue in 2005. LinkedIn introduced job listings and tiered subscriptions. Now, the company is generating more than $300 million in earnings each quarter.


In order to celebrate the 10th year anniversary of the company, LinkedIn put out a collection of pictures showing how the company evolved and changed through the years. Being able to last for a decade is certainly an achievement for any business, whether it is a brick-and-mortar establishment or an online company.
