Infographics: Fewer Link Juice?

“I would not be surprised if at some point in the future we did not start to discount these infographic-type links to a degree,” said Matt Cutts, head of Google’s web spam team during an interview with Eric Enge.

Infographics have gained a lot of good attention lately mainly because of its potential for becoming the next viral thing. It’s popularity among many Internets users vary and some of these include its design which layouts information for easy understanding, loads of trivial information, and overall appeal. With all its viral potential, some online advertising companies have joined the bandwagon and produced their own infographics. This created a minor problem.

Matt Cutts said, “This is similar to what people do with widgets as you and I have talked about in the past. I would not be surprised if at some point in the future we did not start to discount these infographic-type links to a degree. The link is often embedded in the infographic in a way that people don’t realize, vs. a true endorsement of your site.”

“Why? Aren’t infographics great linkable content?” asked Barry Schwartz in his article.

“In principle, there’s nothing wrong with the concept of an infographic. What concerns me is the types of things that people are doing with them. They get far off topic, or the fact checking is really poor. The infographic may be neat, but if the information it’s based on is simply wrong, then it’s misleading people,” said Cutts.

Apart from that, Cutts is also concerned with the fact that some people hide the links that come with embedding an infographic. Because of this, Google might lessen the link value coming from infographics.

Danny Sullivan commented on Schwartz’s article expressing that he feels that it may come to a point that Google will be able to say that only X,Y, and Z links count.

Despite that, Google hasn’t officially considered this or rolled out any plan just yet. In the mean time, you might want to conduct thorough data gathering and research before designing your infographic. You will never go wrong by giving your readers good and accurate content on your infographics.
