Facebook Graph Search for Businesses

Last January 15, 2013, Facebook officially announced the launch of their new product called Facebook Graph Search. As a business owner, you might start to wonder how it can affect your business. “Would participating in this new product help me get more or less customers?” or “Could this improve my visibility on Facebook?” Questions such as these will arise more or less and to answer these questions, we have listed some major facts you need to know about Facebook Graph Search.

What is Facebook Graph Search?

Facebook Graph Search is a completely new way for people to get information on Facebook. It was also described by Facebook Founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, as the “third pillar” after Timeline and News Feeds. He also said that Graph Search is designed to give you the precise answer instead of giving you a link of what might possibly give you the answer to your query.

Right now Graph Search is available to a limited number of people as it is still on its beta stage. This new product will initially let users search through four categories such as photos, places, people, and interest.

He also adds:

“Facebook’s mission is to make the world more open and connected. Today we’re announcing a new way to navigate these connections and make them more useful. We’re calling it Graph Search, and it starts today with a limited preview, or beta.

Graph Search and web search are very different. Web search is designed to take a set of keywords (for example: “hip hop”) and provide the best possible results that match those keywords. With Graph Search you combine phrases (for example: “my friends in New York who like Jay-Z“) to get that set of people, places, photos or other content that’s been shared on Facebook. We believe they have very different uses.”

The search results you will basically see are personalized. Results will depend on the people around you. Apart from that, here are other points you need to know about Facebook Graph Search:

·Creating a Facebook page for your business is a big plus but not necessary. Your business can still show up if someone has added your business as a “place.”

·Search results will be a combination of information created/shared by the business (Pages) and other connections of the person doing the search such as friends, check-ins, likes, and more. Search queries can return “top search suggestions, including people, Pages, apps, places, groups, and suggested searches.”

·Facebook will be tapping into Bing for additional search results in cases where in Facebook doesn’t have much to offer for your query.

·It is not available for everyone as of the moment but you must know that local search will be available as early as day one.

How to Improve Visibility on Graph Search?

Graph search is still basically a search engine and returning high on your friend’s and their friend’s search results can be influenced by certain factors. Although this is still a new platform and not much study has already been conducted, you can bet on these tips given by Facebook itself as safe and healthy suggestions to follow and try for your business.

·Be specific of your name, category, vanity URL, and other information you share in the “About” section of your page. This vital information will help people find your page.

·Make sure you update the location of your business to make it appear as a result when someone is looking for a specific location.

·Try allotting time to attracting the right set of fans and giving them a reason to interact with your page.

No doubt that more tips will be coming once industry experts are able to study Facebook Graph Search and how it tries to pull up search results. But for the mean time, try concentrating on the betterment of your page.
